Ancien élève de l'École de Chaillot, Sylvain Maurice a été assistant d'Agathe Alexis, de Philippe Adrien et de Jean-Pierre Vincent.
Depuis janvier 2003, il dirige le Nouveau Théâtre Centre Dramatique National de Besançon et de Franche-Comté. Il y a crééŒdipe de Sénèque,L'Apprentissage de Jean-Luc Lagarce, Don Juan revient de guerre d'Ödön von Horváth, Un mot pour un autre, un spectacle tout public construit autour de pièces courtes de Jean Tardieu, Le Marchand de sable d'Hoffmann, Les Sorcières de Roald Dahl, spectacle jeune et tout public à partir de huit ans et, la saison passée, Peer Gynt d'Ibsen. Il prépare, en collaboration avec Oriza Hirata et Amir Reza Koohestani, un spectacle trinational baptisé Des utopies ? en création en janvier 2009 au CDN de Besançon.
